Project Plan

On this page, we give a brief overview of what we have already done, what’s still to do and what’s currently in development. For the newest updates on the development process, please have a look at our GitHub page.

Done so far

  • Almost all Roman buildings are in the game and working.
  • Economy working (you can produce stone and planks, food, iron and coal, weapons, soldiers, …).
  • Building construction process fully working with flattening, material delivery, construction by bricklayers and search of a worker or creation of one if none exists yet.
  • Rudimentary fighting system is working. Players can attack each other and take over towers and enemies areas.
  • Multiplayer network games are working accross different platforms. (So an Android can play with a Windows and a Linux player.) It’s possible to open matches and join others via LAN or via a dedicated server.
  • The game is working on Android, Linux and Windows and Mac.
  • Map Editor to easily create new maps and edit existing.
  • It’s possible to play much bigger maps than in the original The Settlers III.                    (We created a map of 1200×1200 tiles and there is no limit to increase this!)
  • Games can be saved and loaded accross platforms. (It’s also possible to save a game on Android and load it on Windows and Linux and the other way round.)
  • You can zoom in and out stageless (see our Screenshots)
  • You can increase and decrease the game’s speed permanently and almost stageless.    Or you can use F12 to go one minute ahead while still seeing what’s happening.
  • Challenging AI player has been implemented.

Still to do

  • The GUI still needs a lot of work and options …
  • Shadows need to be drawn.
  • Improve drawing and game performance (to be able to play bigger maps on mobile devices).

Current status of development

  • The fighting system works with it’s basic functionality (attacking enemies and towers). Other soldier modes need to be implemented (patrolling and so on).
  • The development of an Android specific UI has been started. It improves the handling on touch devices, but still needs more work to be done.
  • A first alpha version of JSettlers has been released. Furthermore, the project is developed as open source project since April 2015.
  • Ships are in development with our own graphics.

Erst mal –> super Sache.

    was mache ich falch ?

    Besten Dank im voraus

    Hey guys,

    its me again 😉

just have tried your last nightly release. Great work! Is more difficult right now.

One thing I miss since first release is to be able to set up teams. Id like to play together with friends in a team. So our settlers will not attack against each other.

Would be nice to have 🙂

Wish a successful and great new year for you all!

      Hi Tomas,

thanks for you post! Here the answers:
      1. No, I don’t think so. At least not in the foreseeable future.
      2. Making the hotkeys is definitely a good idea. Yes, we should do that.
      3. You can already switch the game to full screen by hitting ALT + ENTER
      4. Other races will come some day. But at the moment we focus on the (many) missing features first. 😉

Thank you so much + best regards,

    Hello,

First of all I’d like to thank you for your hard work. This is a game I’ve been playing for quite some time now and it’s a game I’ve always enjoyed.

My question however; With the current progress and the fact that this project started in 2012 makes me wonder when you think the full game will be finished?

    Thanks in advance.
    Sincerely,

      Hi Dion,

seriously, I have no idea… The speed of development changed significantly during this long time. Sometimes I or the other main contributers had a good flow and we got a lot done in a short time. Lately, I was very busy due to work and thus coulnd’t do much on the project. So it really depends on the free time of the contributors… and there number. So If you know somebody with good Java/Android skills, motivate them to contribute, to make this project better and faster 🙂

Anyways, I will stick to it and hopefully get it “done” some day 😉
      Many thanks and best regards,
      Andreas

first, I’m German too, so you can write in German here. I’m answering you in English, so the international audience can also read my answer.

The warehouse isn’t implemented yet. At least it’s functionality. This is planned to be part of the next major release.

What is with auto recruiting? Do you just want to be able to disable it? That will be possible sometime in the future…

Hallo!

      Hi Boris,

yes, the UI on Android is lacking a lot of required features at the moment. That’s mainly because we lack Android developers… However, we’re working on it to get better.

Hi I thought I’d also give some feedback on the matter. I was watching the trailer for android and the person playing is clearly using a Samsung smartphone and I noticed it has the full UI like the PC version. At the moment the UI is definitely lacking even with the 0.3 update. What I don’t understand is that the 0.2 update would at least show the building icons and and in this update it only shows e.g 0-0-0-0-0-0. At this point the game is pretty much unplayable because of the lack of features. I understand there is lack of devs but it would be cool if all the features shown in the video could be implemented soon.

          Hi Robert,

we know the Android version is not playable in the current state. Regarding the user interface shown in the trailer: The trailer shows the state from back then. In the meantime we wanted to create a better UI for the mobile platform, as it was very hard to play with the original UI om a small screen. However, that change got stuck in a bad state and wasn’t finished.

At the moment, I’m looking into bringing back the original controls to Android as a temporary solution. In the long term I’m looking forward to some changes a contributor is currently developing to bring us a new Android UI (a working one this time 😉 ).

          Best regards,

Hey there guys! I realy wanted to thank you for the effort in making this possible! I just installes Settlers 3 again but couldnt play it at all… The sound when you right click your Units to move is realy annoying. I hope you gonna change it or mute it. But the thing I realy hope you gonna add it, cause you also can add new difficulty levels 🙂 which is great! Please add choosable colours! This is so annoying to always play as the red ones… And please god damn it make it possible to choose the NPC Factions! Also make it possible to choose colour for the NPCs.

    Thank you and good luck!

BTW, just curious if it “would” be possible to add the Settlers IV Factions in this Open Source Game? Just want to know, I wont charge you for that guys!

      Hi Robcore,

the choosable colors will be added to the todo list. It shouldn’t be too hard to implement that.
The Settlers IV graphics are very different from the Settlers III ones. Therefore I don’t think its possible to add the Settlers IV factions.

Missions are also not our priority at the moment (important features first). But when we are able to handle missions, one could think about a kind of missions editor so the community could create new missions.

The dark tribe was actually part of Settlers IV, not Settlers III. Therefore it will most likely not be possible to add this tribe because we would need the graphics in the Settlers III style and format.

    Hello guys,
I am really hopeful about what you are doing. To be honest I hope you will not go to far with this game. What I mean this game is great as it is and I hope you wont let your imagination to add to many things that might destroy the game. Personally I got 3 issues with this game. First the AI is pretty damn bad. It would be cool to have difficulty levels of AIs where the hard one are a challange. Second is multiplayer which actually isnt working. Third is building on hills where very often you have plenty of space but you cant build because ground is sheer and building on previously destroyed buildings where left materials always colides. Last request remember that this game has the best animations in video games history please got it in minds. I am totally supporting what you are doing!
    Good luck 😉

      Hi Furjoza,

at the moment we plan to let the remake be quite close to the original game and only add some improvements. We now also have a real Settlers III veterans working with us on the game and more of them testing it from time to time. So if they/you feel like something should be different, feel free to tell us!
However, we will certainly have to alter some balancing values. For example, the walking speed in the original feels way to slow in the remake, as you are usually playing from much “further away” (full screen resolution support). But we don’t want to change the overall balancing of the game.

      To answer your suggestions:
      * We are developing a better AI right now. The first development version is already quite good and will be improved even more. We’re looking forward to release a version with an AI soon.
      * The multiplayer is already working and “should” work much better than the original. We will also improve it even more and add savety measures, so you don’t lose your game if e.g. a server crashes.
      * Regarding building on hills and the materials of destroyed buildings: at the moment it’s about the same as in the original. But we will consider your idea.

Best regards and thanks for your interest!

      Hi Jean

We currently have no converter to parse the maps of the original game to our map format. But we plan to publish our MapEditor and so the community will be able to create its own maps or rebuild old ones. However, the game has currently no AI. At the moment you can only play in multiplayer with your friends over the internet or in your LAN. Also an AI is not in sight, because we want to focus on getting the game playable.

      Best regards

Hello. I am very very interested in your project. Settlers 3 way (and still is, I guess 😉 the best strat game ever. I played it so much during the official blue byte beta that I ended up being feared by even the team BB_ guys (including the president of BB at the time).

Anyways. I am a retired programmer with a fair amount of free time. I made my money on facebook games (I worked for Zynga for 5 years) and pretty much do what I want now. I am an expert in C++ and Actionscript, PHP and the LAMP stack. I am familiar with Java but with my heavy C++ background I usually pick up on Java projects pretty quickly.

      Hi together!

during the last 6 weeks, I spent a lot of time getting the game more and more bug free and stable. Every week I fixed the bugs and made smaller improvements, that a small group of testers found. At the moment it makes no sense to increase the circle of testers, as I still have to do some more of these iterations (the game mechanics are really complex and though the fixes for most bugs are very small code changes, the search takes hours).

However the current version already uses my new network (client and server) implementation and it seems to work really well! The adaption to high and varying ping work good and the protocol ensures that the players cannot get out of sync.

So much for now. I’ll keep you posted!

After chrissly87 stopped working on his Siedler 3 Remake (http://siedler3.net/cb3/topic.php?t=4172) I hope that you will see it through to the finish. Im already very impressed about the bigger map size and the test with 10 k units, that are wonderful improvements. Beside those ones, there is still one very important thing which would be awesome to improve too. Im talking about the AI. Another fan already stated this in the comments. I would still play the old Siedler 3 today on Windows 7, but the only reason Im not is, that my brother and I loved to play in coop against the CPU. Unfortunately my brother’s skill reached a point, where the computer enemies just had no chance, even if we played against 10 of them, in the long run they were just not strong enough. If there was a crack or hack where you could let the computer cheat, we would both still playing. But as there is no such thing out there, we can just hope that you keep evolving your project and integrate more difficulties (Like: Easy, Normal, Hard, Extrem, Impossible) from which you can choose from when selecting AI enemies in a multiplayer game. I wish you the best and please keep on going!
    Cheers,

Regarding the Mac version: That shouldn’t be such a big issue, because we’re using Java. Therefore it should run on a Mac that has Java installed. But for sure we’ll concentrate on Android, Windows and Linux first…
