Release Alpha v0.3: New Main Menu, Original Settlers Maps, better AI and much more

It’s time again for the next release of our Settlers III remake! More than a 1000 commits have been added since the last release to bring you new features and great improvements! This includes (but is not limited to)

  • New main menu for the Windows, Linux and Mac OS version! The new main menu allows for choosing your own start position and the strength and number of your enemy AI players in single player mode. For multiplayer, these features aren’t ready yet.
  • You can now play maps from the original The Settlers III game in our remake!
  • Better AI! The AI became even stronger and got rid of its end game limitations. You can now see it building 70 and more weapons smiths!
  • Full Screen mode as default mode (use ALT + ENTER to switch between full screen and window mode)
  • Market and dokeys have been added.
  • Minimap has been added in the Android App.
  • New user interface for our map editor to make it even easier to create great maps!
  • Tower soldiers can now be set / released from the tower.
  • Tons of bugfixes
  • and even more!

I know a lot of you guys out there also want some long needed improvements of the Android UI… However, we weren’t able to get in many improvements there. Michael has some in progress fixes but we could certainly need some more help there. So if you know somebody with good skills, convince him to contribute 😉

In order to make it easier for new players to get into our game, we’ve written a small guide. Especially, the shortcuts section could be of interest for most players.

Just to give you some vague roadmap, here are the ideas for the next release (no guarantees):

  • I plan on implementing the warehouse
  • Stephan (codingberlin) has some new AI improvements in progress
  • Hopefully Michael gets the time to finish some of the Android fixes
  • Make it possible to select player slots / AIs / number of players in multiplayer matches

To reduce the waiting time for the ones that cannot compile the newest version themselves, we plan on providing nightly builds. Of course they won’t be as stable as these releases, but you’ll get the newest features. I will keep you updated here, when this becomes availble.

As always, have fun with the game and share this with your friends, so they can have some fun too!

    Hi, I have question. Is there any way now to promote soldiers from mana? AI can do this already. Just like AI can make geologists (but can do nothing with them, just sending them in to mountains :P) and human player cant yet.

    Thanks for your great job so far 😀 It would be great if there will appear options like: chooising race, colour and possibility to manage priests and miracles 😀

      Hi Dorian,

      yes, in the PC version of the game, you can upgrade your soldiers already. However, the mobile UI isn’t that good yet. Luckily it is currently improved a lot.

    Can some one make a guide on how to install? WHen i open jsettlers it asks to point at some kind of directory and im not sure what to do.

    This is an awesome project but how can you even play it?
    I have massive lags on the metzel^4 map with 3 very difficulty computer enemies (at normal speed).
    Also it is highly necessary that soldiers walk in a direction where you click. I know this was already a problem in the original settlers 3 but it kinda worked. But in your remake its just frustrating that I have no control about the soldiers at all when they face enemies :/

      on what computer have you been playing? On an Android device maybe? Yes, performance is an issue at the moment… we’re working on that 😉
      Regarding the soldiers, yes, we’re planning to fix this in the future. The current implementation is more or less “temporary” until we get to improve it.

    Big thanks for such great work.
    Is there problem in my Phone ( android 6.0.1) if instead of original icons, hud from settlers presented also on videos i have during game only icon for buildings, a 123 icon which doesnt do anythink, options where i can change only my nickname and IP and map icon. Cant create archeologists and so on. BTW if this is exactly what u planned on build published here there is no worrys. I appreciate your great work and waiting for further development 🙂

      Hi Neon,

      at the moment the Android UI is in rework. The original UI is really bad for phones, as the icons are too small any you loose a lot of the map area due to the menu of the game. So we decided to do a special Android UI. However, that got stuck in the process… at the moment Sylapse (Github user) is rebuilding the Android version. So I hope we get a better Android UI.

    This is just superb. Keep on going!

    We have been playing this game since the original appearance at 1998, with couple of old farts here. And more than often we have been discussing about the small but yet annoying problems in the original game design.

    Hi

    I love the idea and this is the first time i have stumbeld upon something that I have massive child hood memories off. Tho the build up on entisapation was massive and now sinking as i can not find a download for it, for nither android or pc 🙁

    Would love if you could drop a link for me to find. If you already have I am out off word for how blind i am 😛

    You do huge work. I am incredibly glad that I can play the favourite game on phone. But I have one question. I play the latest version of game on android.
    Instead of buildings at me small icons with their quantity.
    And in general the interface not such, as on screenshots and on the original version of game. Perhaps it is some bug? Maybe I have downloaded not that SND and GFX version to phone?

      Hi,

      unfortunately the Android user interface isn’t as developed as the one of the PC version. The original controls do not work really good on phones, so we decided to build a better UI for them. However, as we’re lacking Android developers (and time), we haven’t been able to improve this UI much. But we will keep on working on it!

    Hi all,

    nice to see an new version! One question: I can only play as Rome ( AI also) Is that normal? Teamplay doesnt work yet? (AI player and i in Team 1 for example)

      at the momentm we only support the Roman faction. Others will follow for sure, but aren’t planned yet. First I want to have the important gamplay features ready.
      Regarding teamplay: This doesn’t work yet. It will hopefully be part of the next release.

    Hurray! A new version is out!

    However, this is the feature im waiting for:
    “…the ideas for the next release (no guarantees):

    In December we plan to have a small LAN party, hopefully this feature has seen light of day till then 😀
